If Flamenet has earned a place in your day, this page is how you help it stick around — and it truly does help. The project is one person's work, published through a small company, Extant 2000 LLC, with no investors and no ads. It runs on the generosity of people who like it, and every dollar goes straight into the parts that cost money.
What your money actually pays for
- Running the server. A server, its bandwidth, and the domain.
- An external security audit. The largest single line, and the one thing on the roadmap that cannot be solved by writing more code. A real audit of a protocol this size is thousands, not hundreds.
- Apple's developer programme, without which the iOS client cannot be distributed at all.
And here is a lovely thing about giving here: it never creates a hold over you. The server is open source, and your mailbox can live on any relay — including one you run yourself. Your gift funds the work, and the work stays everyone's. We think that makes it a rather good thing to support.
A few things to know
Everything Flamenet does is already yours, whether or not you ever give — there is no donor tier, and no feature sits waiting behind a paywall. Influence over the protocol is earned by reading it closely and saying something sharp, which costs nothing but attention. We built it that way on purpose, and we rather like it.
One practical note: because Flamenet is made by Extant 2000 LLC — a small company rather than a registered charity — gifts here are not tax-deductible. We would rather mention that warmly now than have your accountant break it to you in April.
Other ways to help
Money helps enormously, and it is not the only thing that does. Reading the specification and telling us where it is wrong, running your own server, or writing an implementation against the published vectors all move the project forward — see community. However you would like to pitch in, we are delighted to have you.
